New Microsoft Dynamics Lifecycle Services (LCS) tools generally available

December 12 2018

The Microsoft Dynamics Lifecycle Services team's latest monthly update includes the official launch of self-service upgrades, along with other tools that have are now generally available.

Self-service upgrade means that after users complete the code upgrade and are able to perform an end-to-end data upgrade in their development environments without manipulating data in Microsoft SQL Server, they can now begin the upgrade process in their sandbox environments.

The self-service upgrade enables users to provision free sandboxes on their target versions, according to the team.

Users can apply one or many software packages to prepare for this new infrastructure, depending on their platform update needs, ISV packages, and customization packages, according to the LCS team. Then when users are ready for their planned downtime, they can begin the data upgrade and the new infrastructure will be connected to their existing databases to execute the upgrade scripts.

“Customers have 10 calendar days to sign off on upgrade for their sandbox environment,” the team stated. “After this, customers can upgrade their own production environment in the exact manner.”

Self-service database export is also now generally available, making the process to export a backup file to bring down to tier 1 developer environments much easier, the team stated.

A user can move a database by using the self-service action to export the database from the Azure SQL Database and importing it into Microsoft SQL Server.

And with the December 2018 update, the Dynamics 365 translation service supports multiple target languages in a single request when the source file stays in the same language. Consequently, customers can track the progress and the details from a single request in one view. This saves time because users don’t have to manually create individual language requests for the number of necessary target languages, according to the team.
